RECREATION

McLarty Treasure Museum

Picture
The McLarty Treasure Museum is a great little museum that paints the story of the ill-fated 1715 fleet of eleven Spanish galleon ships laden with gold, silver, copper and riches as they were heading back to Spain.

All eleven ships sank close to shore in a hurricane.  This museum is located south of the Sebastian Inlet State Park on part of the former site of the “Survivors & Salvager’s Camp – 1715 Fleet.” Exhibits and video recount the history of the 1715 Spanish treasure fleet and displays feature artifacts, replicas for sale, and an observation deck on the Atlantic Ocean. More than 300 years later, salvagers still work offshore in hope of recovering the “Queen’s Jewels.”

The museum is open from 10am to 4pm seven days a week, except holidays.
Admission is $2.  Free for children under 6.

Barrier Island Center

The 34-acre Sanctuary and education center offers visitors a place to explore the dynamic coastal environment. An observation deck, boardwalk and overlook offer magnificent views of the Atlantic Ocean. A 1-mile hiking trail winds visitors across the barrier island, from the ocean to the Indian River Lagoon. Inside visitors can explore aquariums and interactive exhibits, view eco-themed movies in the theater, or shop in the gift shop.

The Sanctuary is the environmental education center for the Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge, one of the most important nesting beaches in the world for sea turtles. Guided sea turtle walks are offered during June and July and a variety of environmental education programs and activities are regularly offered for visitors of all ages. Admission is always free, open Tuesday-Sunday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
